In most companies, social media engagement falls under the responsibility of the Marketing Department - which makes sense. But the Marketing Department can’t (and shouldn’t) move forward on their own. It’s important to reach out to other key departments within your company such as IT, Legal, Human Resources, Customer Service and Sales. (I can hear the collective groans as you ponder the idea of including all of these groups.) For smaller companies that don’t have any or all of these departments, it may be worth consulting an expert in each of these areas in order to discuss possible scenarios.

We’ve found that by getting key members from different departments involved early in the process helps on a number of levels. Sure, it may take more time upfront to get things rolling but it’ll make things much more efficient down the road, and more importantly, may help you avoid mistakes that could damage your brand reputation or hurt you financially (ie: lawsuits or a security breach).
